NSW Government Launches Digital High-Risk Work Licences to Streamline Application Process

Tuesday 27, May 2025

The New South Wales Government has introduced digital High-Risk Work (HRW) licences, aiming to simplify the application and renewal process for workers in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and logistics. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize licensing systems and enhance service delivery across the state.

With approximately 75,000 to 100,000 HRW licence transactions occurring annually in NSW, the digitization of these licences is expected to offer significant time and cost savings for both workers and businesses. Applicants can now submit their licence applications online via the Service NSW website and, if necessary, visit a Service NSW Centre for photo verification. Additionally, current licence holders can add their digital HRW licence to the wallet in their Service NSW app, providing easy access and management of their credentials.

This move aligns with the NSW Government's 'Productivity' mission under the Digital Strategy, focusing on advancing service delivery and supporting the local economy. The transition to digital licences replaces outdated technology, strengthens security measures, and offers a more streamlined digital experience for users.SafeWork NSW

Minister for Work Health and Safety Sophie Cotsis emphasized the importance of this development, stating, "High-Risk Work Licence holders undertake crucial work in NSW operating cranes, forklifts, hoists, and rigs. Holders of these licences are essential workers on construction sites. Digitising this process will save workers money and time and should benefit around 425,000 current High-Risk Work Licence holders in NSW."

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib added, "This is another exciting step forward for the future of licensing in NSW by digitising and simplifying the process for people applying for a High-Risk Work licence. Speeding up the renewal process with this digital solution lets workers get on with the job of keeping NSW moving."

The digital HRW licence is an optional alternative to the physical card, which remains valid and necessary for certain inspections. Licence holders will receive email or SMS notifications when it's time to renew, guiding them through the digital process.
