Emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming workplace safety in Australia as organisations adopt advanced tools to mitigate risks and enhance compliance. Fire and Safety Australia (FSA) is at the forefront of this revolution, integrating AI for real-time hazard detection and drones for emergency response.
AI systems now enable continuous monitoring of worksites, identifying potential dangers such as improper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) or unsafe behaviours. "AI allows us to monitor worksites in real-time, identifying risks like improper PPE use or unsafe behaviours," said FSA spokesperson Jane McAllister. "This technology empowers businesses to prevent incidents before they occur."
The manufacturing industry, which SafeWork NSW reports has double the likelihood of workplace accidents compared to other sectors, is seeing significant improvements due to AI implementation. These systems are reducing fatal injuries and enhancing overall safety protocols.
AI's role extends beyond monitoring. It's being utilised for predictive maintenance, optimising processes, and creating safer work environments. Technologies such as wearable sensors, virtual training programs, and AI-powered inspection drones are contributing to accident prevention and risk mitigation.
Australian logistics company Linfox exemplifies the successful integration of AI in workplace safety. Their AI-powered MHE proximity alert system detects when equipment is within three metres of a person, triggering a series of alerts. Mark Rowley, Linfox's Regional Director of Security, Safety, and Compliance LIG, stated that they have "harnessed innovation to create a workplace where accidents are minimised whilst also prioritising pedestrian safety."
As AI technology continues to evolve, workers in various industries are enhancing their skills in using AI systems for monitoring and analysis tasks. This allows them to focus on addressing complex safety challenges while automating repetitive and manual tasks.
The Australian Government is actively supporting AI adoption in industries through initiatives like the National Intelligence Centre and the AI Adoption Program. They've also developed 'Australia's AI ethics principles' to ensure responsible AI use.
