WorkSafe ACT has partnered with the Suburban Land Agency to remind workers to put safety first on worksites and get home safe, particularly in relation to fatigue and pressure to meet deadlines as the year comes to an end. Work-related fatigue can occur when managing excessive workloads or deadlines, or when the work is physically, emotionally or cognitively demanding. Working when fatigued can result in serious injury or even death.
This year, WorkSafe ACT is focussing on residential construction in Jacka and Whitlam; in addition to inspectors maintaining a strong presence in these suburbs, there will be extensive signage and digital message boards reminding workers and PCBUs not to take any health and safety shortcuts during this time of year.
WorkSafe ACT inspectors will focus on common mechanisms behind injuries in residential construction including falls from heights, scaffolding issues, slips, trips and falls, electrical hazards and exposure to hazardous materials. Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius urged the community to be patient, understanding and realistic during this time of year.
“Our inspectors are not out there trying to be the Grinch, but we know that with all the conflicting pressures this time of year, safety standards can slip. I ask everyone to take a step back from the deadlines and think about your real priorities. Look after yourself, your colleagues, and your loved ones. Put safety first and get home safe this holiday season. This message isn’t just for workers and businesses; it is also something for the community to consider,” Agius said.
