Most incidents stem from loss of focus, not poor judgement. The brain acts differently under stress or routine, causing irrational behaviour. Understanding this “Limbic Risk” is key to improving safety.

When incidents happen, we assume people were thinking clearly—but neuroscience shows most actions are unconscious.
Inattention is common, not rare. It’s the brain’s energy-saving default, especially under stress, fatigue, or routine. As safety systems improve, remaining incidents often involve experienced workers operating on autopilot. Tasks that once required focus become habits, and emotional states like pressure or distraction shut down logical thinking. This shift from conscious to automatic behaviour is called Limbic Risk. The emotional brain takes over, leading to missed hazards or risky decisions. To reduce incidents, we need to understand the brain and how it works.
If you are in any way connected to the safety and wellbeing of your workers, this session will raise awareness on the biggest risk you will face to workplace safety and what you can start doing to influence safer outcomes..

Jimmy Thomson | Operations Director | Jonah Group Jimmy has over 35 years international experience across a range of sectors including finance, resources, power and manufacturing. He has a strong passion for people development that spans across four continents and many cultures. After spending 17 years in Finance where he gradually transitioned from frontline banking to Learning & Development, Jimmy emigrated from his native Scotland to Australia in 2003 in search of a warmer climate. He continued to evolve his own facilitation and coaching skills in finance before taking on a global people role in mining. It was in that role over 6 years that Jimmy realised he could make a real difference in safety and wellbeing before joining The Jonah Group in 2014. When he is not travelling, Jimmy enjoys spending time at home in Tweed Heads (on the NSW/QLD border) with his wife and 2 children, cooking exotic curries, watching sport, and running a local snooker club. On most weekends, Jimmy and his son (who is an U18 Australian National Champion) can be found organising and competing in snooker and billiards events. With a confusing mixture of pain and pride, Jimmy admits that his son is now better than him.
